Past Governor Dr. John ButtonMy Kiwanis Moment

On November 19, 1994, while travelling home from a medical society Christmas gathering in Chatham, my car was struck by a drunk driver who had run a stop sign at 140 kilometers per hour.

His pick up truck passed through the passenger compartment of my car. My wife, Jody, sustained critical head injuries and died two days later in a London hospital with me at her side. I was left with a broken leg, a broken arm, a broken breast bone and a broken heart.

When I finally arrived home, Dale Smith, a member of my club, was waiting in the drive way with tender words and a warm embrace. And the healing began. Over the days, weeks and months that followed, my family, my friends and my club nursed me back to health.
