Questions and Answers

Regarding the District Children’s Project

What was the outcome of the resolution vote taken at the 2007 House of Delegates, in Niagara Falls regarding the District Children’s Project?

  • 98.5 % of the delegates voted in favour of the resolution.

Why did the project need to be passed by the District House of Delegates?

  • The passing of the resolution confirmed the commitment of the clubs to the project.  As well, the passed resolution supersedes Article VIII, section 1 of every clubs by-laws and provides consistent authority to every club in the District to participate in the three year project from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2011.

What does Article VIII, Sec 1 of our club’s bylaws say?

  • A club may adopt or discontinue a project that may last more than one (1) year by the approval of a two thirds (2/3) vote of the active, privileged and senior members present at any regular meeting, provided written notice of the proposed adoption or discontinuance shall have been given to the members at least two (2) week prior to the meeting.  One-third (1/3) of the active, senior and privileged members shall constitute a quorum. There shall be no voting by proxy of absentee ballot.

What is the annual amount that each club is asked to donate to ensure we meet our $1,000,000 goal?

  • To raise one million dollars over three years, each club has been asked to donate $1200 per year.

Why are we partnering with UNICEF Canada?

  • UNICEF has the required knowledge and expertise to identify the needs of children in the Caribbean impacted by HIV/AIDS.  UNICEF is skilled in the administration of this type of project and will provide the necessary “leg work” to implement the project, similar to the role they played in the IDD Worldwide Service Project.

What are the administration costs for the District Project?

  • UNICEF will receive 12% of the funds for administration costs.  This amount will cover local administration to plan and work directly with the District Committee plus the administration costs related to the delivery of programming in three countries – Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

What is the timeframe for the project?

  • The project officially began on October 1, 2008 and will end September 30, 2011.

How will we know that our fundraising efforts are making a difference in the lives of children?

  • In accordance with the written agreement we have with UNICEF, they will be providing regular reports regarding the use of our funds and the outcomes of the project.

The Caribbean region has the world’s second highest HIV prevalence rate after sub-Saharan Africa.

UNICEF and its partners have been supporting national and local programs to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies.  They have also provided pediatric treatment to children and services to support and protect children whose lives have been impacted by HIV and AIDS.

UNICEF’s partnership with The Eastern Canada and Caribbean District of Kiwanis International will provide $1,000,000 in services to critically needed HIV and AIDS programs in Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.  The focus will be on PMTCT (prevention of mother-to-child transmission) programs in Guyana and Jamaica, while Trinidad & Tobago will focus on HIV prevention and care among vulnerable children and adolescents.

Our project will save the lives of children – children like Kayla.
